The castle, built under the sultan Alaeddin Keykubad, encloses an entire hilltop settlement, and the Red Tower at the harbour below it remains one of the most recognisable silhouettes on the Anatolian coast.

Alanya sits within the Antalya region, sheltered by the Taurus Mountains to the north, which accounts for its reliably warm climate and the long swimming season that draws visitors from spring well into autumn. The mountains are not merely a backdrop. They shape the microclimate, funnel rivers down through dramatic gorges, and create the conditions for excursions that feel genuinely remote despite the resort infrastructure at sea level. The Sapadere Canyon, carved by a tributary of the Dim River, is one such place, where cool air and vertical rock walls offer a sharp contrast to the heat of the coast below.
