Belém Tower stands on the northern bank of the River Tagus, a few kilometres west of central Lisbon, and is one of the most recognisable monuments in Portugal. Built in the early sixteenth century as a ceremonial gateway to the city and a fortified defence post, the tower was commissioned during the reign of King Manuel I and designed in the Manueline style, a distinctly Portuguese form of late Gothic architecture that incorporates maritime motifs, armillary spheres, and elaborate stone carvings. It served as a point of departure for the great voyages of the Age of Discovery, watching explorers including Vasco da Gama set sail for India and the Americas. UNESCO recognised its outstanding universal value in 1983, listing it as a World Heritage Site alongside the nearby Jerónimos Monastery.

Visitors today can explore the tower's interior chambers and climb to the upper terraces for sweeping views across the Tagus estuary. The surrounding Belém district is rich with history and cultural institutions, and an audio guide app covering the wider area is available for those who wish to explore at their own pace.
