Meteora is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Greece, where monasteries built by Eastern Orthodox monks cling to the summits of towering sandstone rock formations in the Thessaly region of central Greece. The monasteries, constructed from the fourteenth century onwards, were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, recognised for both their natural setting and their spiritual and architectural significance. Six of the original twenty-four monasteries remain active today, preserving centuries of Byzantine art, manuscripts, and religious tradition.

Kalabaka is the town at the foot of these formations and serves as the main gateway for visitors travelling from Athens. The full-day trip from Athens combines the journey through the Greek countryside with guided access to the monasteries and a traditional Greek lunch, offering a thorough introduction to one of the country's most compelling cultural and natural sites.
