Sobre o local

Sobre este local

Lisbon Cathedral, known in Portuguese as the Sé de Lisboa, stands as the oldest church in the city and one of the most enduring landmarks on the Alfama hillside. Built in the twelfth century following the Christian reconquest of Lisbon, the cathedral was commissioned by the city's first bishop, Gilbert of Hastings, and constructed on a site previously occupied by a mosque. Its Romanesque facade, flanked by two fortified towers, reflects the military character of the era, while successive centuries brought Gothic chapels, a cloister, and a treasury that together trace the full arc of the city's religious and architectural history. The building has survived earthquakes, including the catastrophic 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and each period of reconstruction left its own mark on the interior.

Visitors today can explore the cathedral on a standalone entry ticket, taking in the cloister's archaeological excavations, the Gothic ambulatory, and the treasury's collection of relics and medieval silverware. A combined ticket pairing cathedral entry with a hop-on hop-off bus tour offers a practical way to place the Sé within the broader geography of Lisbon.
