Your guide to Salzburg

Your guide to Salzburg tickets

Few cities wear their biography as visibly as Salzburg. The old town rises from the banks of the Salzach river in a dense arrangement of Baroque facades, church spires, and fortress walls that have changed remarkably little since the archbishops of the Holy Roman Empire commissioned them centuries ago. The Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, anchors the skyline from its perch above the Nonnberg ridge, while below it the Getreidegasse threads through the Altstadt in a corridor of wrought-iron guild signs and amber-lit archways. In 1996 UNESCO recognised what any visitor can see plainly: this is a city whose fabric is itself the attraction.

Mozart's birthplace on the Getreidegasse draws pilgrims from every continent, and the composer's shadow falls across the city in ways both earnest and commercial. Yet Salzburg's musical identity runs deeper than a single name. The Mirabell Palace, built for Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau and later remodelled in the early eighteenth century, has hosted chamber performances in its Marble Hall for generations, and a classical concert there remains one of the more atmospheric ways to spend an evening in the city. St. Peter's Banquet Hall, attached to one of the oldest monasteries north of the Alps, offers a similar immersion, pairing a Mozart programme with dinner in a setting that predates the composer himself by several hundred years.
